Studying with HandyCards on Your Windows Mobile Device

These instructions will show you how to use HandyCards on your Windows Mobile device to study the files you've placed there.

Once you have opened HandyCards, you will see the interface shown in Figure 1.  To begin studying, you will need to open a flashcard file by selecting the "File" menu and then the "Open" option, as indicated by the red arrow in Figure 1.

Figure 1

After selecting the "Open" menu option, you will see the display shown in Figure 2.   In this tutorial, the file used will be the "EditDemo.hc" file.

Figure 2

After selecting the "EditDemo.hc" file from Figure 2, the file is loaded into HandyCards, as shown in Figure 3.   In the lower right corner of the screen shown in Figure 3, there are two boxes, one with a "1" in it and the other with a "2" in it.  This indicates you are looking at question #1 and there are a total of two questions.

In the question shown in Figure 3, the red arrow indicates which answer is going to be selected as the user's choice.

Figure 3

Figure 4 indicates the answer circle for Answer B had been selected.  Next, to determine if the answer is correct, you need to press the "Check Selected Answer" button, as indicated by the red arrow in Figure 4.   Upon pressing this button, the buttons with faces appear, which allow the user to manually indicate if they got the question correct or incorrect.  Also, when the "Check Selected Answer" button is pressed, the font color of the correct answer changes.  If the correct answer was chosen, the answer is changed to a blue color.  If the incorrect answer was chosen, the correct answer is changed to a red color.  Consequently, because the user selected the correct answer, as indicated by the blue color, then the "Right" answer button is pressed to record testing progress, as shown by the blue arrow in Figure 4.

Figure 4

After pressing one of the buttons with faces, they both disappear, as shown in Figure 5.

Because this question is finished, the user can now go to the next question by pressing the "Next Question" button, as shown by the red arrow in Figure 5.

Figure 5

After pressing the "Next Question", you can see that the next question has been loaded, as shown in Figure 6.   Notice the new "Img" button which appears, as indicated by the red arrow in Figure 6.   The appearance of this button indicates the current flashcard has an image associated with it.  Also, a "-" and "+" button appear at the bottom of the screen which allow for zooming the image when it is displayed.  If there were a sound associated with the flashcard, then a "Snd" button would appear next to where the "Img" button and pressing the "Snd" button would play the sound associated with the flashcard.

Figure 6

After pressing the "Img" button, the image is displayed, as shown in Figure 7.   The image name is not displayed anywhere, because the name of the file could convey the answer to the question.

Next, to demonstrate the zooming capabilities of HandyCards, press the "+" button, as indicated by the red arrow in Figure 7.

Figure 7

Figure 8 demonstrates what the image looks like once it is enlarged.  Now that we are through looking at the image, close the image by pressing the "Img" button, as indicated by the red arrow in Figure 8.

Figure 8

Figure 9 simply indicates what the question looks like after closing the image by pressing the "Img" button.

Next, click on the answer circle for "Ans A" to select the first answer.

Figure 9

The red arrow in Figure 10 indicates that the first answer has been chosen as the correct answer.  After pressing the "Check Selected Answer" button indicated by the blue arrow in Figure 10, you learn that the incorrect answer has been chosen, because the correct answer turns red.  Consequently, you need to select the "Wrong" answer button, as indicated by the green arrow in Figure 10, in order to track your progress.

Figure 10

As an aside, one feature of HandyCards is that you can temporarily remove questions by pressing the "Delete Question" button, as indicated by the red arrow in Figure 11.   Deleting questions allows you to focus on those questions which need more attention.  Deleting questions in this manner does not affect the original file.

Figure 11

After pressing the "Delete Question" button, two changes happen on the screen.  First, the "Delete Question" button is converted into the "Undo Changes" button, as indicated by the red arrow in Figure 12.   Pressing the "Undo Changes" button allows you to restore only the current question that was just deleted.  Also shown in Figure 12, the total questions decreases by one and now shows a total of only one question, because there was a question which was deleted.  Now that it is clear what the "Delete Question" button does, press the "Undo Changes" button to restore the testing file to its original form.

Figure 12

After pressing the "Undo Changes" button, the screen returns to the original form, where the "Delete Question" button reappears and the total questions number of questions returns to two, as shown in Figure 13.

Figure 13

To determine your testing score, simply select the "Tools" menu and the "Show Scores" option, as shown in Figure 14.

Figure 14

Once you have chosen the "Show Scores" option, a message box appears showing your score for the current session and it also shows the score for your total testing since HandyCards was started, which is shown in Figure 15.

This concludes the tutorial testing with flashcards on your Windows Mobile handheld computer.  If you have questions not addressed by this tutorial, please look at the HandyCards Readme.txt file or e-mail  support .  While the Readme.txt file is for an older version of HandyCards, it still contains useful information which addresses most aspects of the program found in 5.3.
